"Official Obituary of Hubert Dechant
July 1, 1932 ~ April 14, 2023 (age 90)
Hubert Dechant, resident of Manning AB, formerly of Hawk Hills, passed away peacefully Friday, April 14, 2023 at the Manning Community Health Centre after a brief illness. He was 90 years old. Hubert was born at home on the farm in North Star, AB July 1st, 1932, the eldest son of Tony and Emma (nee Krapp). He attended school in McLennan, was part of the first Grade 12 graduating class in Manning, and later attended mechanic school In Edmonton. He acquired his homestead in Hawk Hills in 1954. After he and Irene married July 2, 1957, they built a house there and made the farm their family home for many years. Hubert was instrumental in founding the Manning Credit Union and served as loans officer. He also dedicated his time as trustee of the Peace River School Division in the 1970s and ‘80s. While Hubert’s true love was with farming the land and his pride lay in helping to feed the world, he was also passionate about history, politics and religion. He enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge with others and was always open for a spirited debate. His faith remained important to him throughout, as well as his deep devotion to Irene. Hubert is survived by his five children: Louise (Terry) Ungarian, Rod (Cori), Vince, Louella (Dwaine) Arnason, and Patricia (Michael); nine grandchildren: Dylan (Lorraine), Jana Parnell, Joelle (Barret Pike) and Davis Ungarian; Jarrett and Quin Dechant; Kelsey and Jordyn Dechant; Aaliyah Cohen. And six great grandchildren: Landon and Carter Ungarian; Summer, Jaxxon and Connor Parnell; and Fritz Pike. Hubert was pre-deceased in February 2023 by Irene Agnes, his beloved wife of 65 years. Hubert was interred at Notikewin Sacred Heart Cemetery following a private family graveside service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Care entrusted to Peace Valley Funeral Home Peace River."

Irene was born at home in Friedenstal, AB, on February 6, 1937. Grade one was taken at St Augustine Mission where she started taking piano lessons, which she did all through her school years. During her high school years, she was the organist for the St. Boniface Church Choir. Irene married Hubert Dechant July 2, 1957, and they moved to North Star, AB. In 1965, they moved to Hawk Hills, where they lived until 1993, when they moved to Manning. Irene was instrumental in getting Guitar Camp started with Sister Anita Hartman. The first camps were held in Hawk Hills, Manning, then later in Friedenstal, and now Hotchkiss. Her passions were playing and teaching guitar; she always had a crochet hook in hand making potholders and creating angels, and a love for painting and gardening! Irene is survived by her husband of 65 years Hubert; five children: Louise (Terry) Ungarian, Rod (Cori), Vince, Louella (Dwaine) Arnason, and Patricia (Michael); nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; as well as siblings: Ed (Elizabeth), Sister Evelyn SP, Jim (Eileen), Marie (Alex) Tauber, and William. Irene is predeceased by her beloved parents, George, and Margaret (nee: Walisser) Dechant, and dear niece Cathy Dechant. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in Irene’s honor may be made to Manning Palliative Care Society, (Box 1260 Manning, AB T0H 2M0)."
