"• It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Mary Luck, a woman with a will to live, three time survivor of cancer; a woman who fought a fourth courageous battle with cancer but lost. On September 24, 2004, Mary Luck passed away at the age of 75. She was born August 7, 1929, at Ober Stuben, Czechoslovakia and came to Canada with her mother in 1933, at the age of 3 1/2 years, to meet her father, Frank, for the first time where she lived for many years to come in North Star, AB. In 1946, at the age of 16 years, Mary found her fist job at the Battle River United Church Missionary Hospital, working as a Ward-aide. Mary met Willie Luck in Manning, AB. On November 14, 1951, they were married in North Star, AB and for the first five years of their marriage, Mary and Willie lived in the Fairview area. In 1956, they moved back to Manning and later homesteaded in Hawk Hills, where they raised six children and farmed until retirement. Mary and Willie enjoyed the years in Hawk Hills where they developed many close friendships. It was a very close and caring community. A major part of Mary's life was raising her family. They were her first love. She was proud of every accomplishment, big or small. After her family, Mary's next love was her school bus kids. She was so proud of them and so proud of herself for 25 years accident free. On occasions when former school bus students would stop her on the street and say Remember me? or Hello, Mary! she would be so pleased. Her smile would be a mile wide. Mary and Willie retired to Manning in 1993, where they both enjoyed their retirement-Willie drinking coffee with his buddies and Mary developing new friendships. She enjoyed meeting her friends for tea, going for walks with them or calling them on the phone to share their days events. Each evening she would call a couple of lady friends to chat about their day and say goodnight. As widowers, this is how they looked out for each other. Mary was a goodhearted friend who supported and comforted others. Mary was also very involved with the Old Hospital Gallery and Museum, compiling the book, Medical Memories of Battle River Hospital. Mary took great pride and developed close friendships as she worked on the committee for the Old Hospital Gallery and Museum. Each year she was asked to take the new volunteers through an orientation. Offering knowledge from her past experiences as an employee at the hospital, she enjoyed giving tours to the many visitors who would stop by. In June 2000, Mary took her daughters on a trip to Germany to meet many new relatives and to visit her homeland. The highlight of their trip was visiting her home village in Ober Stuben, Czechoslovakia, and to view the church were she was baptized. The family will miss Mary dearly, because when we lose our mothers, we lose much that can't be replaced. A mother's love is never lost, but passed on. Mary is survived by her six children; Marlene Finnebraaten (Randy), Manning, AB, Raymond Luck (Gail), Manning, AB, Cathie McKeeman (Erin), LaGlace, AB, Elaine Streeper (Wayne) Grande Prairie, AB, Evelyn Petkus (Andy), Manning, AB and Hugh Luck (Tammy), Sherwood Park, AB, fourteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two brothers, three sisters and many cherished nieces, nephews, and close friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband, William Luck in 1998, mother, Pauline Lichtner in 1982, and her father Frank Lichtner in 2000, sister, Elizabeth Grant in 2001. She will be remembered for her strong spirit and positive attitude in life."
