"Mary E. Luck of Fairview Alberta passed away peacefully at the Fairview Health Complex on January 11, 2007 at the age of 84 years. Mary was born on July 11, 1922 in a log house to pioneer parents Joe and Rosa Doll. She attended school in Red Star. Mary was gifted with a bright mind. She began school at age seven, was promoted to Grade 2 by Christmas, Grade 3 by Easter and finished off the year in Grade 4. She hoped to become a nurse but the untimely death of her father when she was young, sadly meant her school years came to an end at grade nine, age 13. She helped her mother on the farm even helping to stook bundles. Her skills in cooking, baking, sewing and knitting were mastered at an early age and she excelled in all of them. She was very good at sports, her favorite being softball. She also won most of the ladies foot races at the various picnics and events that were held in the area. Mary married a local boy, Joe Friedel, in October 1941. They farmed east of Fairview. Over the next nine years five children were born to them; Gary, Diane, Richard, Martin and Robert. Tragedy struck on February 22, 1953 when Joe was killed in an automobile accident. Mary was left to raise five children between the ages of two and ten. She continued to farm with the help of hired hands. Mary did not let adversity overcome her. She served on the Friedenstal Co-op Board and looked after the store and post office for Sieg Walisser when he was absent. On October 10, 1961 Mary married Herman Luck. Just two weeks after her marriage her only daughter Diane was involved in a serious accident which resulted in Diane being a paraplegic for the rest of her life. Herman and Mary spent many hours of their life caring for Diane. In 1963, a son Edwin was born. In 1965 Herman and Mary built a new home. Mary did all the painting both inside and out and sewed lovely curtains for their new home. In July of 1967, Mary received word that her second son Richard had drowned in B.C. Mary mourned the loss of her son but continued to be a source of strength and support to both her family and her community. She helped Herman with the farming; driving both the grain truck and combine. Her favorite recreation was playing cards with her family especially her sister Annie and brother Daniel. Mary suffered from a severe stroke and diabetes. In spite of all the obstacles and challenges she faced in her life, Mary developed strength of character which became the anchor for the entire family. Mary walked through life with God at her side. She did this without fail up to her dying moments. Mary is predeceased by her parents Rosa and Joe, first husband Joe, son Richard, brothers Benny, Daniel and Fr. Martin and sisters Ida Graw, Monica Kronast and Annie Zinselmeyer. Mary leaves to mourn, her husband Herman, sons Gary (Lorraine), Martin, Robert (Marie), Edwin (Liz) and daughter Diane, 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a great many other extended family and friends. Funeral services for Mary Luck were held at the St. Thomas More Church, Fairview on January 15, 2007 with Fr. Joe Singarajah presiding. Her son, Edwin, gave a stirring Eulogy. Music was provided by Louise Dart, Tony Luck, Charlotte Henderson, Gerry Eherer and Sabina Doll. Marie Meashaw was the organist. Husband, Herman Luck, and Tony Luck sang a German duet especially in Mary's honor. Her grandsons served as her pallbearers. Interment took place at the Friedenstal Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Chapel of Memories. Mary will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her."

"Herman Luck Obituary
Herman Joseph Luck passed away in Fairview, Alberta Long Term Care Center on January 23, 2024, at the age of 91 years.
Herman was born on October 10, 1932, and was raised in a family of eleven children. In his early years, he helped his parents work on their family farm. As he got older, he branched out into other jobs, which over the years included truck driving, roofing, commercial fishing on Great Slave Lake, and others. Herman married Mary Friedel (nee Doll) on October 10, 1961. Mary at that time, was a widow with five children. Herman and Mary worked hard to develop their farm, raising cattle, hogs, chickens, and grain. Along with farming, Herman was most likely known for his exceptional skills operating his front-end loader/backhoe business, which stemmed over 5 decades through out the entire Peace Region.
Herman and Mary had one son, Edwin, in 1963.
Throughout his lifetime, Herman always had a true passion for music and entertaining. He played in bands, with various groups, with singing partners and church choirs. His music touched countless lives throughout his lifetime, from young to old.
Herman was a man of faith, which he lived and followed throughout his lifetime. He was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served Fraternity, Church, and Community for over 60 years. He served on many boards and Societies and donated his time selflessly to many worthy causes and needs. The Friedenstal community was especially important to Herman. He was always willing to help a fellow farmer, a neighbour, a friend. He was never worried about being paid for such, he simply enjoyed helping where a hand was needed.
Herman was a humourist and loved making people laugh. Many say they will surely miss his one liners and jokes which he so freely offered.
Herman was predeceased by his:
· Wife Mary, Stepdaughter Diane, Stepsons Richard and Martin, and Granddaughter Linda
· Parents Paul and Paula Luck
· Brothers Willie, Tony, Joseph, Martin, John, and Frank
· Sisters Mary and Agnes
Herman is survived by his:
· Son Edwin (Liz), Grandsons Colten (Ashley), Derek (Lynnea)
· Stepson Gary (Lorraine), Grandsons Joe (Annie), Dennis (Laura)
· Stepson Robert (Marie), Grandsons Chris (Roby), James (Aaryn), David (Laura), Granddaughter Stephanie (Dustin)
· Grandsons Jerry (Lisa), Richard (Tammy), Don (Tracey)
· Brother Alphonse and Sister Theresa
· As well as many beloved Great Grandchildren, extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Funeral will be held at St Thomas More Church, Fairview Ab on February 2, 2024, at 10:00 am. Internment to follow at Friedenstal Cemetery, with lunch and reception following at Friedenstal Hall.
If desired, a memorial contribution can be made, in Herman’s honor, to the local Fairview Food Bank.
