"FRIEDEL, Mabes

Mabes Friedel passed away on March 25, 2020 in Fairview, Alberta. She is survived by her husband of 59 years Len Friedel, children Brenda (Rob) Kramer, Bruce (Avis), Cathy and Shelley; grandchildren Brock and Britney; sisters Elma Moebes, Patricia Robertson, Muriel (Cecil) Schmidt, Rhoda Matner and Fran (Rick) De Avila. She was predeceased by parents Allan and Elma Smith, brothers Alastair and Norman, and sister Ollie Pearson.

Mabes was born on October 22, 1940 in Vancouver, BC to parents who emigrated from Scotland in the 1920's. The family moved to Vernon, BC in 1941, where they owned an orchard and her dad worked at the army training camp. A move to Blueberry Mountain, Alberta in 1951 followed, where she enjoyed the company of many friends, milking cows, and attending church events.

During a brief year of high school in Pasadena, California, Mabes was in the glee club and known for singing in the outfield while playing baseball. She returned to the Peace River country and started working as a switchboard operator at AGT in Fairview. Mabes met Len at a baseball tournament and they were married the following summer in 1960. Much cooking, baking, and canning followed. She excelled at second base with the Fairview Fastball Club, coached softball, and spent time honing her petit point, knitting and sewing skills. Besides sewing the red serge for the RCMP, the Sisters of Providence also discovered Mom's skills as a seamstress and she began sewing their outfits. Even more fun was teaching the nuns how to drive! Mabes was proud of her long career as a dedicated employee at the Fairview College, working as an Accounting Clerk for 34 years. She worked alongside and faithfully supported Dad's farming and livestock endeavors over many decades, including providing hundreds of hot meals in the field!

Mom loved camping, fishing, and spending time with family in the Okanagan. Her annual trips to Reno for sisters' week were a joy she looked forward to each year. Her singing and hilarious one-liners kept her sisters entertained. Mom was a fabulous cook and baker and her apple pies and pastry were outstanding. Besides being a member of the Fairview Craft Centre, she had many hobbies over the years - petit point, woodworking, ceramics, pottery, sewing, weaving with the knitting machine and loom, and so many handicrafts they are too numerous to count - she tried her hand at everything! Mom took pleasure in volunteering with the weekly bingo at Harvest Lodge and the annual Old Time Country Music Festival. We so enjoyed Mom's singing and her love of music was part of her entire life.

Mom touched so many lives with her kindness and generosity. She had the heart of an angel and now she is one, shining her precious light and smiling down upon us. Mom will be dearly missed. We would like to thank the staff at Fairview Hospital for the compassionate care you gave Mom. A private graveside service will be held at Friedenstal Cemetery at a later date.
