"• Leona Catherine Chalmers was born January 29, 1935 in Fairview 2nd child of Annie and Andrew Friedel. Leona attended school at Friedenstal along with many other relatives. As a young adult she started working at the Fairview Hospital where she made many life long friends. At the age of 21 she married Jack Chalmers son of Cliff & Beatrice Chalmers of Fairview. They set up their home in the Green Island District. Leona was always known even as a young wife as a very hard & dedicated worker. She didn't have time for many hobbies as she became a mother in 1956 when a son Dannie Andrew was born. Leona very much enjoyed her country lifestyle always producing large gardens & preserving the wild fruit of the area. The family later grew to include Sharon, Johnnie, Brent, Dale, Yvonne & Patti. With raising 7 children Leona's life was very hectic. Never time for herself but always for her children & everyone else. She enjoyed community activities with her neighbors, ball games, card parties, and friendly visits. Leona loved going down to the cabin by the river where many families would gather for a camp out. Leona moved from the farm to Fairview and made her home in the former Doctor Snider's house. Once again her green thumb and love of the outdoors produced a beautiful yard. With many bedrooms the house was home to many when you needed a place to stay. Coffee was always on and baked goods coming out of the oven. Leona's love of baking and canning had many of her children calling and asking how do you do bake or can this. They all had their favorite dishes but one that stood out was Leona's "Carrot Cake" she made it for weddings, anniversaries, picnics, birthdays and just because. Even Father Joe was not exempt as Leona made the carrot cake for his 25 Priesthood Anniversary. Leona was diagnosed with colon cancer in Sept 2003. She had surgery on Nov 4, 2003 and was given a clean bill of health on Nov 11, 2004 until later when the cancer returned in the liver. Leona started chemo treatment at the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic with Dr. Moreau and the nursing staff who gave her much encouragement and of course she thanked them with her carrot cake. Leona went into the hospital on Feb 26/07 where she fought her battle with cancer to the end. She was surrounded by her family and never left alone for a moment. She is predeceased by her mom Annie Friedel and her dad Andrew Friedel, and little brother Joseph Andrew. She is survived by her 7 children - sons Dannie; Brent (Laurie); John (Glenda); Dale (Karen); daughters Sharon James; Yvonne (Garland) Morton; Patti (Darin) McLarty; 12 grandchildren Dustin (Trish),Candice, Chad, Craig, Chelsea, Chantelle, Megan, Brett, Ashley, Layne, Brayton and Jerren; 1 great grandchild - Cohan; brothers Donald, Johnny, Lloyd; sisters Theresa, Caroline, Betty, Doreen, Bernice, Barb, Chrissy & families. Memorial service was held on April 4/07 at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Fairview, officiating was Reverend Jayaraju Koppula O.S.A. Music was provided by the St. Thomas More Choir; Tina & Joe Zacharias. Active Pallbearers were all of her grandsons and the Honorary Pallbearers were all those in attendance. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Palliative Care or Garrison Manor Wheel Chair Fund."
